Public speaking has become a necessary skill in the workplace. The ability to give a presentation, deliver a sales pitch, propose a toast, do an introduction, speak at a service club meeting or even give a speech is crucial to success.
Fear of public speaking is a debilitating phobia. Meeting participants are too nervous and terrified to talk and participate; students get the shakes and do not participate in class discussions; people find ways to avoid presentations and meetings because they involve public speaking.

Toastmasters is a great organization. It is a learn-by-doing environment. There are no instructors, there is a positive feedback process and you learn rules about timing, grammar and parliamentary procedure. Best of all is a monthly magazine that is full of advice, tips and introspective stories.
There are at least three clubs in the St. John's area. I am a member of The Cabot Club and the Terra Nova Club. There is also a club at Memorial.
