BACK TO THE ROUTINE

The alarm clock on my Mac started buzzing at 6: am. The Mac automatically starts updating my morning podcasts, the script sniffs through my favorite blogs and I am presented with my morning updates. It is my time before the chaos begins. At 6:30, I disconnect my Ipod from the Mac, plug in into the stereo in the living room and start getting the kids out of bed, fed and into their school clothes which Kris has neatly arranged.

Conor is not happy with the news that he only gets to go to school for twenty minutes. He wants to go all day! Liam refuses to get out of bed. I threaten water and he springs to life. Kris finishes her shower, I fill the cereal (I really wanted to type serial) bowls, toast some bread and pour up the juice while ironing my pants and shirt.

Aidan has changed and Conor joins him outside where they bring the garbage to the curb and cover it with the net. Kris is delayed trying to convince Liam to wear (want so strongly to say where) his new sneakers. He refuses to budge. In the end Kris wins.

They pose for a back to school picture. Its 8:05, no time to spare. Aidan and Kris head to Virginia Park Elementary and I have to drop Conor off (not of) at his grandfather's (our regular babysitter has a flu bug) and take Liam to MQP. Traffic is horrible and no one is giving an inch but I manage, just barely, to get Liam into his classroom on time and get to work. I need to wake the boys up an extra 15 minutes early tomorrow to avoid the rush and prepare for any unexpected complications.

The fun begins anew at 1:15 when Conor has to go meet his new teacher and spend 20 minutes in class. I still need to find a sitter for the afternoon.

Summer vacation gave me temporary amnesia. I had forgotten how hectic the school-work day routine can be. The ritual is taxing and hectic. The transition from summer holidays to back-to-school is going to take some patience and organization as we get back into the swing of things. Kris is already dreading three lots of homework and another night of enforcing early bedtimes. Despite our best efforts bedtime usually got a little lax during summer vacation. Waiting until the night before school begins to start enforcing early bedtimes was a huge mistake.

I think I will make plans to hire a babysitter for Friday night so we can have dinner and see a movie. We are going to need it!

Am I ever glad I work from home. Having the kids' school a three-minute walk away doesn't hurt!
