My mother visited her cancer specialist today. She has been having some very painful complications from her last surgery. Her doctor saw her quickly because it was an emergency. Turns out it is serious and the doctor wants to do another surgery as quickly as possible. The good news is that this was caught quickly and mom had access to her gynecological oncologist without delay. What happens after December 21st? That is the date mom has been told by her doctor that she will be resigning.
My mom is just one of hundreds of women being put in a pressure cooker as provincial government stumbles through the crisis caused by negligence and inaction at the Department of Health, which had previously refused to address requests for increases in support staff and access to more operating-room time. The stress built up to the point where the entire gynecologic oncology team was forced to resign.
What happens on Dec 22 or Jan 1st when mom has another complication? Who will a general practitioner refer patients to at the hint of trouble? Who decides what cases get priority? How many women will literally die because of the red tape and delays? Minister Wiseman's foolish plan to send gynecologic oncology patients out of province for treatment is a joke. What is the plan?
