Speaking of broken promises. The Williams Government promised, leading up to the 2003 campaign, to stop the practice of promoting ministers through departmental ads. Of course that moratorium did not last long. The ministers of Environment and Services & Works are on the radio in the fall cautioning people to watch out for Moose on the Highways, the Minister of Labor is wishing people a safe labour day weekend and the Minister of Education is welcoming kids back to school.
For the past several days one particular commercial on VOCM has caught my attention. It is a voice over from Education Minister Joan Burke that I feel has evolved the departmental welcome back to school ad into a purely political ad. The Minister talks about the government's $70 million commitment to schools and programming last year.
I really do not have a problem with a Minister using provincial tax dollars to pass on a labour day greeting, the Moose Safety Message might be better done by a professional, but the investment in the current education radio ad on VOCM is political propaganda.
The Progressive Conservative Party has tons of cash on hand to pay for backslapping campaigns. The people of the province should not be paying for what amounts to political advertising masquerading as a back to school message.
