I will continue to support the ABC. It is a logical local political response to the way this province has been treated by Stephen Harper over the past three years. The Conservatives have salted the political ground in Newfoundland and Labrador and that makes for a tough environment to seek support in.
One thing I am sick of is hearing how ABC is all about the Premier's ego and that we are just shooting ourselves in the collective foot by robbing the Conservatives of an elected rep from this province. That we need to have a Newfoundlander in the Conservative caucus. We have several members in the caucus, they are senators. So there is no chance that we would not have a cabinet minister for lack of a warm body. (I assume Conservatives are warm blooded)
The Conservatives broke a raft of election promises not Danny Williams. The people of the province have a justifiable reason to thank the Conservatives at the ballot box for their record when it comes to this province. The concept that we must elect a few Conservatives to ensure government largess continues reflects poorly on our ability to stand up for ourselves. Having three members in this government cost us $10 Billion when Harper reneged on excluding non-renewable energy sources from the equalization formula.
Back to the purpose of this post. It turns out that the former health minister Elizabeth Marshall is the lone Progressive Conservative member of the caucus to declare she will be staying out of the fall election. In a local CBC radio report today she says she can not bring herself to work for a Liberal or NDP campaign. I can understand that. This ABC has to be a tough one for many Progressive Conservatives. Teaming up with and working for your political enemies even for a short period of time seems unnatural. If you're a true ideologue and not a pragmatic type, voting liberal or new democrat is just not an option. Sitting it out is.
