Last year I spearheaded a Unity Rally to protest the Federal Government's unilateral changes to the Atlantic Accord via the 2007 federal budget and to tell Mr. Harper there was a political price to be paid for breaking his promises to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Some commentators say that the majority of this province did not support the federal conservatives in the last election so why should we have expected them to honor any promises. The only ones who should be mad are those who voted Conservative! The promise to remove non-renewable energy from the equalization formula was worth $10 Billion dollars that could have gone to roads, schools, education, seniors, eaters, sewer, health, nurses, doctors, teachers and other provincial priorities.
Normality will only come when Stephen Harper and his Conservatives pay the political price at the polls as Mr. Westcott said in his columns and on CBC commentaries last spring. These were promises made to all Newfoundlander's and Labrador. This was not some off the cuff comment at a rally but a written proposal to the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. A written contract that Stephen Harper reneged on once he became Prime Minsiter.
This morning I heard former journalist and current Conservative Candidate in St. John's East Craig Wesctott say that Province had a billion dollar surplus last year, that the issue of the broken promise is moot. It was time to suck-it up and normalize our relations with government.
I have never supported the neo-conservative policies of the Reform-Alliance-Conservative's. I would be one of those that voted liberal in the last election. However I am also a Newfoundlander and Labradorian who expects our national leaders to deliver on their promises. I also expect Newfoundland and Labrador members of the House of Assembky to side with their province. The three Conservative M.P's from this province went with personal gain over standing up for their province.
Of course Avalon MP Fabian Manning and his Boss Stephen Harper say they honored their promises. The two Conservative candidates in St. John's say the Conservatives did not honor the promises. Westcott says they tried but they were unable to deliver because of the other provinces. Poor Stevie, he tried, give him a break will yea! Mervie Wiseman must still be suffering from car lag after the trouncing he just received a few weeks ago in his failed attempt to become the Progressive candidate in Baie-Verte Springdale. He to says the Conservatives broke their promise. I expect they will both get hauled in over the comment by Mr. Outhouse for communicating the wrong message. It should be interesting when they start telling Westcott what to do. He is nobody's toadie or so he says.

ReplyDeleteSomeone should quantify Danny Williams' broken promise to the Labrador Metis.
Heck, his promise to all of Labrador re "primary beneficiaries".
It's interesting how some broken promises get some people's dander up more than others.
Come on, Danny. Regain our trust. Restore our confidence.
Speaking of - you have that big crowd shot yet? I'd really love to see it.
