As Hurricane Gustav fades away the political storm surrounding Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin continues to pick up speed and voracity.
The latest attack centers around the pregnancy of Palin's 17 year old daughter, Bristol who five months pregnant. The mud slinging came from rumors that Palin had faked a pregnancy and pretended to have given birth in April to her fifth child, a son named Trig who has Down syndrome. The rumor was that Trig was actually Bristol Palin's child and that Sarah Palin was the grandmother!
An op-ed piece in the New York Times by Maureen Dowd yesterday was vicious. Dowd was awarded a Pulitzer for her series of columns on the Monica Lewinsky scandal and is considered one of the most dangerous columnists in America. Brains versus sex. The serious and the superficial. The battle of the sexes. This has long been the terrain of Dowd’s journalism. Her penchant for provocative overstatement was in full bloom in yesterdays article.
Broadcaster and political analyst Taylor Marsh's argues that Palin is a desperation on display in her latest offering for Pajamas Media.
It would appear that Palin may be boon to John McCain's base but he may loose everyone else in the process. She is now the central figure in this fall’s electoral drama.
Meanwhile, Democrat nominee Sen. Barack Obama said firmly that families are off-limits in the campaign for president. Obama said reporters should "back off these kinds of stories" and noted that he was born to an 18-year-old mother.
