New Democrats in the riding of St. John's South-Mount Pearl will select their candidate tonight.
NDP stalwart Fred Windsor is facing recently converted journalist Ryan Cleary. The issue facing the party is putting in place an electable candidate or just putting a name on the ballot.
Cleary has a reputation as a no-nonsense, take no prisoners investigative journalist. On Monday The Telegram published parts of an unflattering commentary by Cleary about the NDP written a few years ago. As Westcott discovered yesterday, once you publish it you have to defend it (or not) forever. Cleary's frustration seemed to be with the party's inability to attract new people and always shooting for opposition and not the government. Either way the "aging granolas and artsy fartsies in Town" may have the last word on the matter.
Should be an interesting night.
