The premiers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia on Thursday announced a $6.2-billion deal to develop the Lower Churchill hydroelectric megaproject, bypassing a historical roadblock at the Quebec border.

Ottawa— Globe and Mail  - Atlantic Canada will see a fundamental reshaping of its electricity market as a result of a $6.2-billion deal between Newfoundland and Labrador’s Nalcor Energy and Halifax-based Emera Inc. (EMA-T30.140.511.72%) to build the long-delayed Lower Churchill power project, Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter said Thursday.

TELEGRAM - Premier Danny Williams announced the start of the long-awaited Lower Churchill hydroelectric development this morning in St. John’s.

The development involves a $6.2 billion partnership between energy corporations from the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia — Nalcor Energy and Emera Inc.

“This day is of great historical significance to Newfoundland and Labrador as we move forward with the development of the Lower Churchill project, on our own terms and free of the geographic stranglehold of Quebec which has too long determined the fate of the most attractive clean energy project in North America,” Williams said.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams finalized a $6.2-billion deal to develop the Lower Churchill hydroelectric project on Thursday, raising questions about whether the new electricity will be routed through New Brunswick.
Nalcor, N.L.'s Crown-owned energy corporation, and Nova Scotia's Emera Energy have agreed on a term sheet to develop the hydro project at Muskrat Falls.

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter plans to meet with Premier David Alward to discuss how the agreement would enable New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to strengthen the electricity system in the Maritimes and create jobs in Atlantic Canada.
