PREGNANT WOMEN NEED NOT APPLY

The job ad for newfie's and Canadians in a recent edition of the Telegram raised a few hackles and solicited an apology from the the company. Earlier today I was looking for a job posting, for a friend, from last weekend's paper and stumbled on another controversial ad that raised my eye brows.

Is telling pregnant women not to apply for a job a human rights violation? What happens if they get pregnant after they start? Would they be fired? Is birth control a condition of employment?  Will there be testing?

Seriously, does this ad make anyone else mad?

Can an employer refuse to hire a pregnant woman because of her pregnancy, because of a pregnancy-related condition, or because of the prejudices of co-workers, clients, or customers.

I thought the PC's brought in changes to the law last spring that specifically prohibit discrimination based on pregnancy.

Can anyone clarify?

It is totally illegal.

And since this coincides with a national ad campaign reminding employers of exactly that... and since Uniloc Security Syetems doesn't seem to exist.. I suspect this is a part of that campaign.

Ads are meant to be read, Peter.

Maybe you should try doing that first.

In this case, you have an excellent ad that grabs your attention...but it requires that you read it all in order to get the point.

I think the ad worked. I was shocked.

Of course up until the amendments this year, this issue was not specifically dealt with in our provincial legislation. The changes were long overdue.

Of course I did not read outside the box until I saw a hard copy of the paper.It got me. :)

Most, if not all of the advertisements in the career section of the paper are bordered with boxes. The content contained in those boxes is for job seekers. I can see how anyone could have mistaken that ad as genuine.

Very creative on the part of those promoting human rights.
